The structural channel, also known as a C-channel or Parallel Flange Channel (PFC), is a type of (usually structural steel) beam, used primarily in building construction and civil engineering.

So what are C-channels used for? In short, they reinforce tabletops to help prevent cupping and warping. You’ll install them on the underside of the tabletop.

C channels have tapered flanges, meaning that the flanges’ inside surfaces aren’t parallel. MC channels have parallel flanges that are flat and not sloped, making them easier to assemble or bolt because no spacer washers are needed to create a flat bolt surface inside the “C”.

A variation of the C-Channel, the U-Channel has an extra hole on the bracket portion of the stock, giving it a more “U” shaped appearance. This stock is great for bracing different towers and other supports, as the “U” shape can envelope the towers, adding additional space for box-bolts, making the towers more secure.

C channels are renowned for their versatility, making them suitable for a wide range of applications. Their open design allows for easy installation of pipes, cables and other components, making them ideal for electrical and mechanical applications.

C-section channel overcomes this by moving the web out to one edge of the flanges, changing the cross-section from an “I” to a “C” in the process. C-section thus has three flat surfaces for mounting to. It’s still strong, although this geometry does give up a little of the rigidity of the I-beam.
