Ductile iron is typically twice as strong as many grey cast irons, and nearly as strong as steel. While ductile iron shares many of the advantages of cast iron, the ductile iron is more difficult to cast, and has a different shrink rate than cast iron. This difference means different patterns are required.Ductile iron is less brittle than other cast iron, even before heat treatment. It does not fracture as easily with impact. Being ductile allows the iron to bend. In comparison, gray cast iron is harder.

Ductile Iron Compared to Steel Pipe
Ductile iron pipe’s advantages in field adaptability, corrosion control, and pipe wall thickness make it far superior to steel pipe substitutes.

In ductile irons, graphite is in the form of nodules rather than flakes as in grey iron. Whereas sharp graphite flakes create stress concentration points within the metal matrix, rounded nodules inhibit the creation of cracks, thus providing the enhanced ductility that gives the alloy its name.

Unlike cast iron, ductile iron does not break when it is bent, so it is more suited for high demand applications. Ductile iron is a strong and reliable material for pipes, fittings, and valves. One drawback is price. Ductile iron is typically more expensive than cast iron due to its more complicated chemical makeup.

Ductile Iron can be welded successfully to produce welds that have mechanical properties comparable to those of the base iron. As with any base material, the success of welding Ductile Iron depends on suitable equipment, correct procedures, qualified welders, and effective quality control procedures.
